On 16 November 2017 Kerstin Schankweiler gave a lecture at the Dies Academicus 2017 "Social Media? Transformations of the Public Sphere and Politics through Social Media", Catholic Private University Linz.

"Sousveillance - Images Testimonies of police violence in Social Media and Contemporary Art Projects"

Around the globe, citizens have in recent years been documenting police brutality with their mobile phone cameras and circulating the videos on Social Media. These images constitute a specific mode of testimony and lead to the emergence of transnational protest communities and icons. Furthermore, they are often taken up in contemporary art. This lecture discusses cases of police violence from the USA, Egypt, Morocco and France and investigates their reception in contemporary art.
