Bens, Jonas – 2019

This chapter makes propositions on how to ethnographically investigate discourse practice as it is embedded in affective dynamics. Discourse practice events have usually been investigated with a focus on language and speech. Without giving up this focus on the practice of talking, this chapter argues to understand the linguistic performances as embedded in affective arrangements. By mobilizing the analytical metaphor of the time machine in which past and future appear as re-enactments and pre-enactments, a methodological device is proposed to include broader structural forces and long-term processes in the ethnography of discourse practice. As such, it is in discourse practice events that sentiments become manifest, are enacted, invoked, mobilized, shaped and transformed.
