The project (duration: 1.10.2023 - 31.3.2024) focuses on the migration and arrival experiences of mainly young people who have been coming to Berlin since the 2000s.

News from Oct 17, 2023

Vietnamese Berlin is a highly dynamic and heterogeneous field. The historical-social contours, primarily shaped by the immigration groups of the so-called "boat people" and contract workers, were comprehensively investigated during the first two terms of the SFB. In contrast, the migration and arrival experiences of those, primarily young people, who have been coming to Berlin since the 2000s are largely unknown. The applied ethnographic research project  (duration: 1.10.2023 - 31.3.2024) is dedicated to filling this gap. We are interested in lived realities, especially of young women and mothers, as well as the perspectives and burdens of care workers and trainees, their motivations for migrating to Germany and the corresponding migration strategies. In addition, we will discuss support strategies that aim to meet the needs of the actors in this transnational social field as well as of the Berlin administration, social work, health care and staff in daycare centres and schools also encounter. On the basis of the study results, we will work out application references that will serve as support for the actors in this transnational social field as well as for the Berlin administration. The project is funded by the district office of Lichtenberg.
