Current: Politics and Culture of the Affective

Prof. Dr. Jürgen Brokoff / Prof. Dr. Cilja Harders

The focus of the tandem cooperation in the academic year 2021/22 is the mutual determination of affect and politics, for which a reference to institutional conditions (states, publics...) and the consideration of the heterogeneity of cultural and media contexts is necessary. The work organised by the political scientist Cilja Harders and the literary scholar Jürgen Brokoff, which integrates all subjects and disciplines represented in the SFB, is interested beyond abstract conceptual discussions in concrete determinations of the political in emotion- and affect-bound contexts and life processes. Only in the concrete institutional, historical and cultural contexts can the power and powerlessness of acting subjects be made adequately visible and thus be analysed. The intertwining of affect and politics becomes the object of study in exemplary fields (e.g. cultures of dispute and debate, affect and colonialism, image politics and image protests, data and archives in authoritarian and democratic societies). At the same time, however, it also concerns the self-image of the academic activity of the research network itself.
Events with external researchers, internal discussions and joint readings, the continuation of the series of talks at the Deutsches Theater (DT) under the title "Counting on Miracles ..." as well as further broadcasts of the SFB podcast series "More than a Feeling" are planned. The joint work will be rounded off with a workshop dedicated to the constellation of literature and politics in affective societies.
