This entry draws on Deleuze’s and Guattari’s “agencement” and on Foucault’s “dispositif of power” and develops these notions into a working concept for affect theory. An affective arrangement comprises an array of persons, things, spaces, discourses, behaviors, expressions, or other materials that coalesce into a coordinated formation of mutual affecting and being-affected. While its composite materials are heterogeneous, an affective arrangement is characteristically social. It usually brings multiple human actors together, foregrounding their reciprocal affecting and being-affected. The concept thus pertains to the mutually formative combination of socio-material settings and local and non-local affective relations. As part of an affective arrangement, affective relations are channeled and modulated in recurrent ways that can be charted by researchers. Besides discussing key sources of the concept, the chapter presents methodological considerations and examples from recent research.
