These were introduced as part of the European Agenda on Migration in 2015 and successively implemented in Greece and Italy - such as the now infamous Moria camp on the island of Lesbos or the hotspot in Pozzallo in Sicily. Migration was initially discussed predominantly in terms of national identity and social belonging. Over the past three decades, however, it has increasingly become the norm worldwide to view migration as a security issue. In migration research, this is referred to as the securitization of migration.
