Feeling feminist futures in digital environments

Lünenborg, Margreth; Makhashvili, Ana – 2025

Connecting queer feminist strands of affect theory with media studies, this chapter discusses the various ways in which affect may contribute to imagining and creating digital futures. Social media platforms are a crucial site for mobilizing feminist and anti-feminist movements, among others. Traditionally marginalized groups use social media to disrupt hegemonic discourses, as seen in cases of anti-racist, trans, and feminist activism. However, instances of racist and anti-trans discourse also reveal affective alliances between some feminist activists and far-right or anti-gender groups. These cases emphasize how affect sometimes solidifies existing structures of knowing and feeling, while also offering the possibility of transforming them. In this chapter, we discuss examples of digital feminist activism and emphasize emotions of discomfort, dissonance, and contestation as possible entry points into feminist mobilization.
