Current Research

Decolonizing the ethnographic museum: A Case of Tanzania collections in the Ethnologisches Museum Berlin

My PhD research project focuses on an ethnographic exploration of colonial ethnographic collections brought from Tanzania to the Ethnologisches Museum of Berlin. Approaching it from the affect and practice theories, the study will explore from an emic perspective the communities of origin understanding of meanings, ownership, uses, in/alienability and other narratives regarding ethnographic objects. Most importantly, the study will offer an account of affective dynamics (affects and emotions) associated with objects de-contextualization and their being in the Museum instead of their socio-cultural context in which they are or were made and used. Further, I will examine the communities of origin (Maasai and Chagga) perspectives on the ongoing restitution repatriation debates.
