Head of project Staff Short profile of the project

Vietnamese Berlin is a highly dynamic and heterogeneous field. The historical-social contours of this transnational field, primarily shaped by the immigration groups of the so-called "boat people" and contract workers, have been extensively studied in the first two terms of the SFB. In contrast, the migration and arrival experiences of those, primarily young people, who have come to Berlin since the 2000s are largely unknown. The application-oriented ethnographic research project addresses this gap. We ask about the realities of life, especially of young women and mothers, and about the perspectives and burdens of caregivers and trainees. We are interested in their motivations for migrating to Germany and the corresponding migration strategies. In addition, we would like to work out the problems, hurdles and difficulties that the new migrants in Berlin face and that professionals from administration, social work, health care and staff in daycare centers and schools also encounter. On the basis of the study results, we will work out application references in discussions with those affected as well as professionals, which should serve as an aid not only for the Berlin administration, but for all actors in this transnational social field. The project is financed by the district office of Lichtenberg. Duration: 1.10.2023 - 31.3.2024
