Talk series "Counting on Miracles" at the Deutsches Theater

Feb 21, 2022 | 07:00 PM

From greed to reciprocity? On the current discussion about ethnological objects

European colonisers plundered the subjugated countries and many objects ended up in German and European museums afterwards. Should they be returned? Is that even possible? Or are these false dichotomies that, in a way, again put European sensitivities at the centre of the discussion? Paola Ivanov is the curator of the collections East / Northeast / Central / South Africa of the Ethnological Museum, private lecturer at the Institute for Cultural and Social Anthroplogy and heads a project on "Contested Property" in SFB 1171 "affective societies". In conversation with Cilja Harders, she plumbs the depths of the current restitution discussion and emphatically calls for "provincialising" Western-European perspectives and entering into an encounter with others, which is the prerequisite for a serious decolonisation of museums and our thinking.

The event will be held in German.
The current hygiene rules of the Deutsches Theater apply to admission. Admission is free
