"Please (don't) touch!" – Reflections on immersion in art and everyday life

The experience of immersion, diving into other worlds, seems to become more and more relevant. Touching is no longer prohibited at the muesum, at school or at the theatre. Quite the opposite - audiences, students, museum visitors and console gamers are encouraged to cross old borders between 'reality' and 'game/virtuality'. Is this an expression of fundamental change? Could we, for example, try to read the pandemic as a global experiment of immersion?

Doris Kolesch is a professor for theatre studies at the Freie University Berlin and heads a research project about immersive theatre at the CRC „Affective Societies“. Together with Cilja Harders she asks the question what happens to phantasy, distance and contemplation once we have immersed ourselves into another world.
