"AFROPEMOTIONS": Rethinking Emotions, Inequality, and Resistance through Afropean Women’s Fiction

Apr 27, 2026 | 04:00 PM

Isabella Villanova, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Visiting Fellow at CRC Affective Societies

What role do emotions play in experiences of belonging, inequality, and resistance? In her talk, Isabella Villanova presents insights from her current research project on Afro-European women’s literature. Drawing on selected novels, she shows how emotions not only reflect individual experiences but also make social power relations visible, particularly in the interplay of race, gender, and inequality.

At the centre is the question of how emotions "stick" to bodies, circulate within societies, and shape who is recognised as belonging – and who is not. At the same time, emotions also emerge as a productive force: they can open up spaces for resistance, empowerment, and new forms of community.

The event will be held in English.
