Una Europa PhD Slam 4 Oct. 2021

Eight Una Europa PhD students will present their research in a 7-minute slam, focusing on the broad concept of sustainability. The audience will choose the three winners, who will receive prize money of €1,000 for first place and €500 each for second and third place. For Freie Universität, Cornelia Ertl from SP A07 "Touching Plants" competed under the title "Growing Together: Human-Plant Encounters."

The participants each presented their research projects on sustainability in seven minutes in an original and entertaining way. At the first international event of this kind, viewers were invited to vote for their favorites and choose the three best. The event, held in English, was moderated by poetry slammer, science slammer, and physicist Dr. André Lampe from Freie Universität Berlin.


The PhD slam was organized by Freie Universität Berlin as part of the European university alliance Una Europa and supported by Berlin Science Week. It took place at the same time as the annual conference of the University Alliance in Sustainability, also organized by Freie Universität

Launched in 2019 and financially supported by the European Commission for deepening their cooperation in the field of study and teaching, the European University Alliance includes eight renowned universities. Participating are Alma Mater Studiorum Università di Bologna, Freie Universität Berlin, University of Edinburgh, Helsingin Yliopisto, Uniwersytet Jagielloński w Krakowie, KU Leuven, Universidad Complutense de Madrid and Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. The aim of the association is to improve the quality of European higher education, develop innovative teaching format as well as promote cooperation between the institutions, their students as well as employees.
