Mobilizing Sexuality: Social Justice, Affect and Emotion in the Anti-Gender Discourse

May 11, 2026 | 04:00 PM

Silvia Biasetton, University of Padua, Visiting Fellow at CRC Affective Societies

Anti-gender movements are gaining influence internationally and increasingly present themselves as defenders of their own vision of "social justice." Silvia Biasetton’s talk explores how these discourses operate and why they are so effective.

The focus lies on the role of sexuality: it is used to define social order, draw clear boundaries between "us" and "them," and legitimise political claims. At the same time, the talk shows how deeply these processes are shaped by emotions, such as fear, perceived threat, and promises of protection and stability.

Drawing on empirical insights, the presentation demonstrates how these affective dynamics circulate, how people relate to them, and why they are so powerful.

Event language: English.

Silvia Biasetton is a PhD candidate at the University of Padua in the fields of philosophy, sociology, and cultural studies. Her research examines how sexuality is framed as a category of “justice” within anti-gender discourse and how emotions shape collective identities and political mobilization.
