Sedimented Crises: Layered Histories, Affect, and the Embodied Landscapes of Social Disruption

Nov 28, 2026 - Nov 29, 2026

Crises are rarely events that simply end. They settle in layers: in landscapes and buildings, in archives and narratives, in bodies and feelings. Colonial violence, political upheaval, displacement and social rupture continue to resonate across generations, often below the threshold of the visible, yet palpable in atmospheres, gestures and practices of remembrance. Sedimented Crises asks how these layered histories can be researched, made tangible and critically engaged.

The workshop explores affect and embodiment as ways into historical and contemporary crises. How do crises sediment in places and bodies? What kinds of knowledge emerge when history is not only discussed, but explored through movement, perception and artistic practice? And what methodological and ethical challenges does this raise for research and art?

The programme brings together scholars, artists and practitioners from Germany, Tanzania and beyond. It includes talks and thematic panels, alongside experimental formats that combine anthropology, somatic practice and art: embodied explorations, movement-based sessions, artistic interventions and shared moments of discussion and reflection. The workshop grows out of an ongoing collaboration in which such methodologies have been developed and tested at the intersection of these fields.
