How does colonialism continue to shape the ways we feel, relate to one another, and imagine the future? On 9 July, the Affect and Colonialism Web Lab invites audiences to SPORE Initiative for an evening of film screenings and conversation exploring the affective afterlives of colonial histories.
The Affect and Colonialism Web Lab is a collaborative project developed by researchers associated with the CRC 1171 Affective Societies and brings together scholars, artists, and activists from different parts of the world. Through video essays, artistic interventions, podcasts, and digital exhibitions, the project explores how colonial legacies continue to shape contemporary experiences and social relations.
At the centre of the evening is a screening of selected video works that offer distinct perspectives on colonial histories, urban life, memory, ecology, and decolonial futures:
Camila Flores-Fernández: Ghost in the Park
An ethnofictional documentary set around Berlin’s Görlitzer Park. Narrated from the perspective of a ghost searching for a new place to belong, the film explores community, care, and everyday life in a contested urban space.
Marina Guzzo: Letters to the Landscape (Ruined Alphabet)
A poetic video work weaving together bodies and landscapes, memory and futurity, theory and artistic practice. Through a “ruined alphabet,” Guzzo creates a fragmented correspondence across ecological, aesthetic, and political worlds.
Laibor Kalanga Moko / Jonas Bens / arjunraj (tba)
A new work currently in development will engage with the collections of the Humboldt Forum and ongoing debates around restitution and colonial provenance.
Following the screenings, audience members are invited to join an open conversation with participating artists and contributors. The evening offers an opportunity to learn more about the project, encounter new perspectives, and discuss the ongoing affective legacies of colonialism together.
