Nitzan Shoshan

To what extent may we think of the figure of Hitler as a moral exemplar in today’s Germany, like that of Franco in Spain or, to an increasing degree, Mussolini in Italy? Not much, one might suppose, given the cultural taboos and legal prohibitions that govern its memory as well as the negative views of Hitler himself prevalent even among many right-wing extremists. This talk nevertheless considers a number of ways in which National Socialist exemplarity continues to exercise a moral force along several registers of affective attachments, from the repulsion at its legacy to the nostalgic longing for its ordinary icons or the adoration of Führer-substitutes.
