On the basis of a review of positions on the relationship on language/discourse, affect, and emotions as conceived of in social and cultural sciences, the chapter makes a methodological proposal to grasp affective dynamics in discourse. In a case study centering on German news coverage after the Charlie Hebdo attack, “Reading for Affect” is laid out as a perspective in analyzing discourse that is informed by affect theories, approaching (a) the discursive ascription of emotion to bodies, (b) relating discourse bodies with affective means, and (c) bodily material characteristics of discourse itself.
