Jonas Bens receives Heisenberg grant from the German Research Foundation (DFG)

In October 2022, A-06 project team member Jonas Bens received a five-year Heisenberg grant to work on the topic “The Material Culture of Empire: Colonialism, Capitalism, and the Law”.

"Colonialism and Capitalism" Seminar

During the winter semester 22/23, and inserted in the Bachelor's program of Social and Cultural Anthropology of the Freie Universität Berlin, Jonas Bens conducted a seminar titled "Colonialism and Capitalism".

Ethnosymposium 2022

On September 17, 2022, Maren Wirth gave a presentation titled "The Temporality of Colonial Violence in Maasai Objects and Photographs" at the annual student conference, Ethnosymposium 2022 "Truth(s). Lifeworlds. Realities. Seeing like an Anthropologist".

Maasai Community Workshop

Together with Maasai collaboration partners, the A06 research team, including Paola Ivanov, Jonas Bens, Laibor Kalanga Moko and Maren Wirth, conducted a two-day workshop in Oltukai village, Tanzania, on July 1 and 2, 2022, in order to discuss community demands for an engagement with the ethnographic collections taken from Maasai country during German colonial times.

Rage, Reckoning & Remedy – Global Meeting on Law and Society, Lisbon 2022

The Global Meeting on Law and Society took place in Lisbon, Portugal, from July 13 to 16, 2022, with the theme “Rage, Reckoning & Remedy”. Jonas Bens presented his paper "Pluralizing Property Regimes in the Colonial World: The Controversies on Restituting Ethnographic Museum Collections".

DFG funds the scientific network “Pluralizing the Value of Things”

In May 2022, the German Research Foundation (DFG) decided to fund the Scientific Network “Pluralizing the Value of Things”. Over the course of three years, this network, which is chaired by A06 team member Jonas Bens as well as Philipp Schorch (LMU München), will establish a dialogue between the anthropology of value and new approaches in the anthropology of materiality and personhood beyond regional approaches. Among the ten network members are also Paola Ivanov and Laibor Kalanga Moko from project A06.

"Introduction to Culture and Society" Seminar

During their field research in the frame of project A06 Contested Property, Jonas Bens and Laibor Kalanga Moko jointly lectured the course “Introduction to Culture and Society” at the University of Dodoma from April until July 2022.

During the summer semester 22, Paola Ivanov taught the seminar titled "Plurale Ontologien und museale Sammlungen: neue Perspektiven auf die Erforschung der materiellen Kultur" in the Bachelor's program of Social and Cultural Anthropology at Freie Universität Berlin.

Property or Looted Art: The Ethnological Collections in the Humboldt Forum

As a part of the regular lecture series of the European Journalists Fellowships (EJF) offered for the winter semester 21/22, Jonas Bens gave a lecture on the topic “Eigentum oder Raubkunst: Die ethnologischen Sammlungen im Humboldt-Forum” (Property or Looted Art: The Ethnological Collections in the Humboldt Forum) on February 9, 2022.

Presentation of „The Affect and Colonialism Web Lab“

On October 27, 2021, Jonas Bens and Rosa Cordillera A. Castillo presented the conceptual framework and the work of the newly launched Affect and Colonialism Web Lab as part of the broader Berlin Anthropology Seminars Winter 21/22.

GAA Conference 2021

Between September 27 and 30, 2021, Paola Ivanov, Jonas Bens and Laibor Kalanga Moko took part in the biennial conference of the German Anthropological Association (GAA) "Worlds. Zones. Atmospheres. Seismographies of the Anthropocene in Bremen.

Anthropology of Cultural Heritage Workshop

On August 2, 2021, the A06 project team conducted the workshop “Anthropology of Cultural Heritage” at Freie Universität Berlin, which featured invited contributions by Andrea Scholz (Special Curator of the Collaboration with Indigenous Communities, Ethnologisches Museum Berlin) and Philipp Schorch (Professor of Museum Anthropology, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München).

Myriad Materialities: Towards a New Global Writing of Colonial Ports and Port Cities

Paola Ivanov contributed a presentation for the conference “Myriad Materialities: Towards a New Global Writing of Colonial Ports and Port Cities”, which took place online on July 2, 8 and 9, 2021.

Africa Challenges conference of the African Studies Association in Germany

On June 7, 2021, Jonas Bens and Leonie Benker chaired the “ Challenging the Rule of Law: The African Laboratory” at the “Africa Challenges” conference of the African Studies Association in Germany (VAD e.V.) organized by the Centre for Interdisciplinary African Studies (ZIAF) at Goethe-University Frankfurt am Main. They also presented their respective papers on the theme.

SFB Affective Societies - Theories and Methods Workshop

On Thursday, June 11, 2021, project A06 Contested Property presented and discussed methodological aspects of their research on the theory and method workshop’s roundtable.

On June 2, 2020, Laibor Kalanga Moko spoke in a roundtable discussion titled „How to do Anthropology on the move now?“ in the anthropology BA methods course at FU Berlin. The event was organised with the intent of exchanging ideas, insights and reflections on ethnographical methodologies.

On March 19, 2020, invited by the Centre of Advanced Studies of the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, Jonas Bens presented a paper titled “Die Sentimentalisierung von Menschen und Dingen: Die Zerstörung der Mausoleen von Timbuktu vor dem Internationalen Strafgerichtshof”.

ZMO: On Justice

On February 14, 2020, Jonas Bens presented the draft chapter "The Sentiment of Justice: Navigating Normative Pluralism in Northern Uganda" during the Thematic Day “Justice/Injustice” organised by the ZMO.
